Animal Cakes

Whether your kids wants a cake of your family pet or one that resembles a pet or cartoon on television, animal cakes have always been popular. What really cracks me up is that there are so many pet owners that actually want birthday cakes for their dogs!

I once made a cat cake to resemble my cat. It was my first carved cake and it came out okay, but it was a big lesson. The fur is easy enough to make by using the grass tip. That works for buttercream. If you are covering the cake in fondant, you can use a tool to create the effect of fur on the cake.

Animal cakes that are 3 dimensional are the most difficult and may need hardware to be assembled. You have to build a structure and occasionally form parts of the animal with rice krispie treats.
