The YIPS was popularized by the American golfer Tommy Armour to explain the difficulties that eventually led him totally abandon playing in tournaments. This has happened to other famous golfers and can of course happen to anyone.

The yips, by definition, is 'an unwanted pattern of involuntary behavior'. It is characterized by an awkward action that perverts their normal putting stroke, particularly on short putts. You know, the ones that anyone can easily make. It's a condition of the nervous system. To the afflicted golfer, the find that their body simply doesn’t do what they want it to.
What is happening is they have a performance anxiety building up, a worry about not doing well, about missing such a simple shot. They find negative thought patterns creaping in and the more they try to beat it the worse it becomes.
